⚠️ 5 Fatal Traps in Text Case Conversion & Localization
💥 1. The Turkish Dotted vs. Dotless 'I' Authentication Failure
In Turkish, lowercase i uppercases to dotted İ (U+0130), while uppercase I lowercases to dotless ı (U+0131). Using naive toUpperCase() or toLowerCase() breaks username lookups, system logins, and case-insensitive SQL matching for Turkish users.
⚖️ 2. German Eszett (ß) Uppercase Expansion Irreversibility
The German lowercase letter ß (eszett) uppercases to SS. Converting back with toLowerCase() produces ss instead of ß, altering semantic word definitions (e.g. Masse meaning mass vs. Maße meaning dimensions). Case-folding German strings without locale sensitivity irreversibly mutates spellings.
🛡️ 3. Title Case Preposition & Conjunction Capitalization Flaws
Naive title casing capitalizes every word indiscriminately (e.g. "War And Peace In The 21st Century"). Major editorial style guides (Chicago Manual of Style, AP, MLA) mandate that short articles, prepositions, and coordinating conjunctions (a, an, and, but, for, in, of, on, the, to) remain lowercase unless positioned as the first or last word.
🔍 4. Consecutive Acronym Collisions in camelCase & snake_case
Transforming variable names with consecutive uppercase abbreviations (e.g. getHTMLHTTPRequest) with primitive regexes fragments acronyms into isolated letters (get_h_t_m_l_h_t_t_p_request). Production programmatic case converters must preserve cohesive acronym groups (get_html_http_request).
🚀 5. Diacritical Stripping & Accent Loss in ASCII Conversions
Converting accented European characters (e.g. café, mañana, Zürich) using ASCII-only regular expressions strips umlauts, tildes, and acute accents completely. This corrupts international customer names, shipping labels, and multi-currency invoices.
