Cron Expression Generator & Schedule Builder
Construct Linux and Unix crontab expressions with live human-readable translation and next execution calculations.
⚠️ 5 Fatal Traps in Cron Schedules & Background Workers
💥 1. The Daylight Saving Time (DST) Phantom & Double Execution
Scheduling crons in local server time between 2:00 AM and 3:00 AM creates catastrophic billing or backup failures. In spring, 2:30 AM is skipped entirely (the job never fires); in autumn, 2:30 AM occurs twice (the job executes twice, duplicating payment runs or outbound customer emails). Server crontabs should ALWAYS run strictly on UTC.
⚖️ 2. The Cascading Overlap Deadlock (Execution Duration > Interval)
Running a task every 5 minutes (*/5 * * * *) that takes 7 minutes during peak database load causes concurrent instances to pile up. Each new process consumes CPU and database connection pool slots, slowing down previous runs in a vicious cycle until the server experiences out-of-memory (OOM) panic. Always guard crons with file locks (flock -n /var/lock/job.lock) or distributed Redis mutexes.
🛡️ 3. The '0' vs. '7' Sunday & Day-of-Week Parser Dialect Trap
In standard POSIX / Vixie cron, 0 and 7 both represent Sunday. However, in Java Quartz and AWS EventBridge cron dialects, 1 represents Sunday and 7 represents Saturday! Copying a crontab string between Linux, Kubernetes, and AWS CloudWatch without verifying the dialect shifts weekly jobs by a full 24 hours.
🔍 4. The Day-of-Month AND Day-of-Week 'OR' Logic Surprise
In POSIX crontab specification, if both Day-of-Month (field 3) and Day-of-Week (field 5) are specified (not *), the command executes when EITHER condition matches (logical OR, not AND). For example, 0 0 13 * 5 does NOT run on Friday the 13th; it executes on EVERY Friday and EVERY 13th day of the month!
🚀 5. The Stripped Shell Environment (Exit Code 127 'Command Not Found')
Crontab executes commands within an extremely minimalist environment where PATH is typically reset to /usr/bin:/bin and user environment variables (like $NODE_ENV, $DATABASE_URL, or virtualenvs) are completely absent. Scripts fail silently with exit code 127 unless absolute binary paths (e.g. /usr/local/bin/node) and explicit .env sourcing are provided.
