Floor & Wall Tile, Grout & Mortar Calculator
Calculate exact tile counts, retail box quantities, 25 lb grout bags, and thin-set mortar for bathroom floors, kitchen backsplashes, and walk-in showers. Automatically factors in cutting waste by installation pattern: straight grid, offset subway, diagonal, or herringbone.

Tile Geometry & Pattern Visualizer
Vector bond simulation illustrating selected laying pattern (Straight Grid vs Offset vs Herringbone) and proportional joint width.
Tile Geometry Formulas & Standard ANSI Grout Math
Accurately forecasting tile consumption requires converting tile inches to square footage, applying pattern-specific cutting waste coefficients, and computing grout volume along linear seam perimeters.
A_{\text{tile}} = \frac{W_{\text{in}} \times L_{\text{in}}}{144} \quad [\text{sq ft}]
2. Gross Surface Area with Waste:
A_{\text{gross}} = (L_{\text{room}} \times W_{\text{room}}) \times (1 + \frac{\text{Waste}_{\%}}{100})
3. Box Quantity Calculation:
N_{\text{boxes}} = \left\lceil \frac{A_{\text{gross}}}{\text{Sq Ft Per Box}} \right\rceil, \quad N_{\text{tiles}} = \left\lceil \frac{A_{\text{gross}}}{A_{\text{tile}}} \right\rceil
4. Grout Bag Requirements (ANSI Standard):
\text{Grout Weight (lbs)} = \frac{(L_{\text{in}} + W_{\text{in}}) \times T_{\text{in}} \times J_{\text{in}} \times 1.75}{L_{\text{in}} \times W_{\text{in}}} \times A_{\text{net}}
5 Critical Tiling & Substrate Pitfalls
1. Subfloor Deflection Failure (L/360 Rule)
Ceramic and porcelain tile have zero tensile elasticity. If your plywood subfloor flexes more than the span divided by 360 under foot traffic ($L/720$ for natural stone), foot movement will crack grout lines within months and pop tiles off the mortar bed. Add a second layer of plywood or uncoupling membrane.
2. Swirling Trowel Ridges Instead of Parallel Lines
Combing mortar in swirling circular motions traps pockets of air beneath the tile. When heavy objects drop on these hollow spots, the tile instantly shatters. ANSI standard mandates combing thin-set in straight, parallel ridges in one direction, then collapsing ridges by sliding the tile perpendicular.
3. 50% Offset Lippage on Large-Format Tiles
Tiles over 15 inches long (such as 12x24" porcelain) always have a slight manufacturing crown (curvature) in the center. Installing them in a 50% brick offset places the highest point of one tile directly next to the lowest point of the adjacent tile, causing severe "lippage" (tripping edges). Never exceed a 33% offset.
4. Cement Board Is NOT Waterproof in Showers
HardieBacker and Durock cement boards do not rot when wet, but they are completely porous: water passes directly through them into wall framing. A true shower installation requires applying a continuous liquid waterproofing membrane (RedGard, Hydro Ban) or sheet membrane (Schluter Kerdi) over the board.
5. Grouting Perimeter Expansion Joints
Hard grout should NEVER be installed at the perimeter where tile meets baseboards, bathtubs, or vertical walls. Natural thermal expansion requires a 1/4" soft expansion gap filled with flexible color-matched silicone caulk. Grouting these changes of plane guarantees cracked, crumbling grout.
