⚠️ 5 Fatal Traps of Data & Media Format Conversions
Review these critical conversion traps before processing production data and image assets:
1. Lossy-to-Lossy Generation Loss
Converting an already-compressed JPG into WebP or another lossy format reapplies discrete cosine transform (DCT) quantization, magnifying compression ringing and mosquito noise around high-contrast edges.
2. Alpha Channel Blackout (Transparency Stripping)
JPEG format does not support alpha transparency channels. Converting a transparent PNG logo directly to JPEG causes transparent areas to collapse into solid black or white pixels unless composited against a background color.
3. Floating-Point Precision Truncation in JSON & YAML
64-bit integer values exceeding 2^53 - 1 (e.g. database snowflake IDs or high-precision crypto balances) lose precision during JSON parsing unless formatted as text strings.
4. Base64 33% Payload Expansion
Inlining large base64 strings into HTML or CSS balloons initial transfer sizes by one-third and defeats browser parallel asset caching. Use binary file references for assets over 10KB.
5. Mobile Hardware Canvas Resolution Limits
Attempting to resize or rasterize graphics exceeding mobile GPU texture limits (typically 4096x4096 on older smartphones) causes silent blank canvas output. Always check source dimensions before processing.
